Field preparation is underway!
The idea of a field with with a lavender shaped walkway stemmed from a conversation (thanks Renee for the pun) with Leslie and Victor, our lavender consultant, at the kitchen table last fall. Leslie sketched out a complex field layout while Tom scratched his head thinking how to make it work. After a few iterations, the simplistic layout was finalized and Tom began figuring out how to go from concept to planting.
How?
How it is done? GPS, tablet and a lot of late nights! An Emlid Reach RS+ GPS base station and rover system was used to locate key points in the field with centimeter accuracy. The field layout was imported into FieldBee, a precision farming guidance application, with a lot of help from the FieldBee team. The GPS system provides the tractor location to the FieldBee app and app tells the driver which way to go. The result is straight rows. In the future, the system will hopefully be used to automate tasks, like mowing between rows.
